The Short Answer
You can check your visibility in about 30 minutes for free. Search your name, check your indexed pages, ask ChatGPT and Gemini about you, search your service like a customer would, verify your listings, open Search Console, and compare your reviews. This article walks you through each check.
Before you spend a dollar on marketing, you should know where you stand. Most business owners have a vague feeling that they are hard to find online but have never actually tested it. These seven checks take about 30 minutes total, cost nothing, and will tell you more about your online presence than most paid reports I have seen agencies sell.
Grab a coffee, open your browser, and score yourself as you go.
Check #1: Search Your Exact Business Name
Type your full business name into Google. You should dominate that entire first page. Your website, your Google Business Profile, your Facebook page, your Yelp listing, maybe some reviews or press. That page one is your digital storefront and it is what people see right before they decide to call you.
If your website does not appear first for your own name, something is technically wrong and it is probably serious. If the results are thin or the info is wrong, customers are hitting that mess every day. Pass: you own the whole page. Fail: your site is missing, buried, or surrounded by wrong information.
Check #2: Run the Site Command on Your Domain
Go to Google and type site: followed by your domain with no space, like site:yourbusiness.com. The results show every page Google has indexed from your website. This is your inventory in Google’s system.
Two things to look for. First, the count. If you have 40 pages and Google shows 6, most of your site is invisible and nothing on those missing pages can ever rank or feed an AI answer. Second, the content. If you see junk pages, old test pages, or duplicates, your site quality is being diluted. Pass: your real pages are all there. Fail: pages are missing or junk is indexed.
Check #3: Ask ChatGPT and Gemini What They Know About You
Open ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. Ask each one two things. First, what do you know about your business name. Second, who is the best your service in your city. Screenshot everything.
This is the check that stings. If the AI has never heard of you, or describes you wrong, or names three competitors for the recommendation, you now know exactly how much ground you have to make up in the channel growing fastest. Hundreds of millions of people use these tools weekly and that number keeps climbing. Pass: the AI knows you and describes you accurately. Fail: you are unknown or your competitors own the recommendation.
Check #4: Search Like a Customer in a Private Window
Open an incognito or private window, so your own history does not skew the results, and search the way a customer would. Your service plus your city. Emergency your service. Best your service near me. Do it on your phone too, because that is where your customers are.
Look at what actually appears. The AI summary, the map pack, the ads, then the organic results. Are you in the map pack? Are you anywhere on page one? And when you do appear, is your listing the one a stranger would click, with reviews and a real description? Pass: you appear in the map pack or top results. Fail: page two, or a weak listing on page one.
Check #5: Audit Your Listings for Consistency
Search your phone number and your business name in quotes. Open every listing you find: Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps, Bing Places, the Better Business Bureau, industry directories. Compare the name, address, phone, and hours against your website.
Every mismatch is a small crack in the verification systems Google and the AI assistants run on your business. Old addresses and dead numbers from a move three years ago are still out there right now, quietly telling the machines your business cannot be confirmed. Pass: everything matches. Fail: two or more conflicting listings.
Check #6: Open Google Search Console and Read Your Real Numbers
Search Console is free and it is Google telling you directly what it sees. If you have never set it up, verify your site today. If you have it, open the performance report and look at the last three months. Which queries bring impressions? Which pages get seen? Where do you rank on average?
Most owners have never looked at this and are stunned by what it shows. Queries you never targeted bringing impressions, pages you forgot about getting seen, and important pages getting nothing. It also flags indexing problems and mobile issues that are invisible any other way. Pass: set up, reviewed, no coverage errors. Fail: never verified, or errors sitting unfixed.
Check #7: Count Your Reviews Against Your Top Three Competitors
Search your service plus your city, find the three businesses Google shows most prominently, and write down their review counts, ratings, and how recent the newest review is. Then write down yours.
Reviews are public proof, and the gap is the gap. A competitor with 180 reviews and fresh ones every week is telling Google, the AI assistants, and every customer that they are the safe choice. If your profile shows 14 reviews with the newest from last year, you know exactly why the phone is quieter than it should be. Pass: you are at or near the leader. Fail: the leader has triple your count.
“Most business owners have never once searched for themselves the way a customer does. The ones who do it monthly are never surprised by a bad quarter.”
